DRAWING AND PAINTING

Gesture, form, color, and space are explored through all media, augmented by class discussion and individual critique, Still life/model will be used each session. All levels of drawing and painting are encouraged.

SCULPTURE – STONE
with Natalie Frier – 5 wks starting July 12

Find the joy and excitement in carving a form in stone in a congenial atmosphere. Beginning students will be introduced to the tools and process of bringing a sculpture to completion. Advanced students will be encouraged to use power tools. Non-representational as well as figurative methods will be taught with the emphasis on creating three-dimensional shapes. All levels of ability are welcome.

PASTEL

Learn to work in pastels. Subject matter: the figure and still-life set-ups. Class fee includes some classes with models.

BEGINNING WATERCOLOR

A great class for beginners, work with a limited palette. Explore watercolor; see if it’s for you without going into debt to buy supplies. All basic techniques will be covered.

THE CREATIVE PROCESS

THEORY AND PRACTICE OF LANDSCAPE PAINTING FOR OIL PAINTERS

We will work from reference material including: Previously painted work en-plein-air; photographic reference (pictures taken by student, print media or other images) copying masterwork for educational purposes. Easel and group discussions of students’ work.  We will move outside as soon as weather permits!

THE FIGURE FROM BLACK AND WHITE TO COLOR

Traditional and non-traditional approaches to drawing and painting the figure will be explored moving from black and white to color. All levels welcome.

Wednesday

DYNAMIC FIGURE DRAWING
with John Varriano – 6 weeks starting July 7
9:30am – 12:30pm $180
While drawing the model, explore the elements common to all good drawing – movement, proportion, structure, line and form. Learn to conceptualize the complex forms of the body as simple groups of masses and sub-masses. Individual critiques and lectures.

PORTRAIT
with John Varriano – 6 weeks starting July 7

Focus on the basic painting principles of massing, value, relationships and color as applied to the portrait. Poses, typically, two sessions long. Develop basic painting skills and particulars that relate to portraiture ie: character and likeness. Instruction geared to students’ individual skill level.

CRAFT AND THEORY OF PAINTING
With Max Horbund – 56 weeks starting July 7

Course includes use of materials and color theory. Course covers approaches to painting portrait still life and floral pieces including the chiaroscuro tradition of European masters. Students will be guided through the challenge of realistically representing still life and live models in oil. Many aspects of still life painting will be discussed and illustrated. Discussions on picture composition and creation of atmosphere, sense of mystery and proper preparation of painting materials. Demonstrations and individual critiques.

PHOTOGRAPHY – TECHNIQUE AND DARKROOM
with Jim Edmonds – 6 weeks starting July 7
7:00 pm – 10:00 pm $180
Learn how to develop black & white film, make contact sheets, edit, crop and enlarge. Areas covered include: dodging, photographs, solarization, mat and frame types. Special attention given to photographing 3D objects and making slides of flat art work. Develop a personal vision. Students should shoot a roll of (400) Tri-x Black & White film to bring to first class.

Thursday

DRAWING & PAINTING FROM THE FIGURE WITH FEELING & EXPRESSION
with Candi Feinberg – 6 weeks starting July 8

Traditional and non-traditional approaches to drawing and painting  the figure will be explored moving  from black and white to color. All levels welcome.

PRINTMAKING
Monitored – 6 weeks starting July 8
9:30am – 2:00pm $150.
This class covers the techniques of etching, mono print, relief, safe photo-etching and digital lithography. All levels are welcome.
Note: For all classes add $5 solvent fee.

INTERMEDIATE AND ADVANCED WATERCOLOR
with Christine Friedman – 16 weeks starting July 8
10:00 am – 1:00 pm $180
Develop your own style in this exciting spontaneous medium. Classes stress the importance of design, value and color complements. Salting, scratching, glazing, stenciling, masking, dry brush, wet on wet techniques are introduced. Landscapes, seascapes, floral, still life, and water reflections are handled seasonally from photos or actual set-ups.

OIL PAINTING: STILL LIFE/LIFE PORTRAIT
with Max Horbund – 6 weeks starting July 8

Emphasis on portraiture using the forms of still life.

PORTRAIT AND THE CLOTHED FIGURE

Learn to draw and paint with charcoal, pastel or watercolor. Short action poses and longer ones of a costumed model. All levels welcome. A good introduction to fashion illustration  and excellent for portfolio development.
