  • PAINTS:
    · Titanium White or Flake White
    · Red – Cadmium, Alizarin Crimson*
    · Blue – Ultramarine *, Prussian*, Cobalt
    · Yellow – Cadmium, Indian, Ochre
    · Green – Earth, Sap*
    · Raw Umber , Burnt Umber

  • · PAINTING SURFACE
    Stretched canvas (12×16” or 16×20” are good sizes to begin with)(12×16” or 16×20” are good sizes to begin with)
    Gesso primed panel (12×16 1/8” Masonite or equivalent prepared commercially or by yourself)
  • · MISC.
    Medium-sized painting knife and/or palette knife. Small cup for holding liquid medium/mineral spirits. Small container of odorless mineral spirits- Sunnyside brand is cheap and very good. Small quantity of vegetable oil and liquid or solid soap for cleaning brushes; paper towels and disposable plastic bags for refuse.

    • · OPTIONAL
      Drawing material that you may want to have: drawing pad (2×16 is useful as is a smaller one for your pocket), some soft or medium charcoal sticks – (fat and medium thickness), kneaded eraser, small piece of chamois, charcoal pencil-medium or soft, single-edged razor blade or pen knife to sharpen pencils.
  • · BRUSHES:
    Assortment of white bristle FILBERT shaped brushed #4 thru #10 with two or more of sizes 4 and 6. Paint’s white handle hog bristle brushes, Robert Simmons, Grumbacher Degas series or Princeton pure bristle among other brands.
  • · PALETTE
    16” x 12” (fits plastic palette keeper) or larger palette made from middle value wood, Lucite or Masonite manufactured or cut to size by a hardware store. These palettes are usually about 1/8th inch thick. If you have a 1/8th inch Lucite panel cut for you, leave the protective contact paper on one side to provide the middle value. Seal the Masonite with one or two coats of shellac (break the shine, wipe with alcohol and coat with shellac when dry).

    White = Utrecht white, Permalba, or another titanium / zinc mixture
    Other useful colors: Zinc white, Viridian, Sap Green, Indian Yellow
    Do not buy ‘student grade’, ‘sketch grade’, ‘Hue’, or anything other than regular professional grade paints. OK brands include: Utrecht, Rembrandt, or other premium brands.
  • · MEDIUM
    No. 922 medium (available at the Art Students League of NY or from Max Horbund)
    Or a mixture of 1 part stand oil or sun thickened oil to 2 parts odorless mineral spirits (Turpenoid or Sunnyside brands are fine or a mixture of 1/3 each of Stand Oil, Linseed Oil and Odorless mineral spirits.
