TOM PARKES – DRAWING

· 1/8 “ thick board-masonite or other sturdy construction. Sized slightly larger than your drawing paper. Clips to hold paper (Pearl Paint sells a sturdy drawing board with built in clip)
· Kneaded eraser
· Wolff’s carbon pencil-2B, 3B, 4B. You may have to experiment to find the right one for you.
· Sand paper block or piece of sand paper wrapped around wood
· Industrial single-edged razor blade

    Medium-sized painting knife and/or palette knife. Small cup for holding liquid medium/mineral spirits. Small container of odorless mineral spirits- Sunnyside brand is cheap and very good. Small quantity of vegetable oil and liquid or solid soap for cleaning brushes; paper towels and disposable plastic bags for refuse.

      Assortment of white bristle FILBERT shaped brushed #4 thru #10 with two or more of sizes 4 and 6. Paint’s white handle hog bristle brushes, Robert Simmons, Grumbacher Degas series or Princeton pure bristle among other brands.· PALETTE
      16” x 12” (fits plastic palette keeper) or larger palette made from middle value wood, Lucite or Masonite manufactured or cut to size by a hardware store. These palettes are usually about 1/8th inch thick. If you have a 1/8th inch Lucite panel cut for you, leave the protective contact paper on one side to provide the middle value. Seal the Masonite with one or two coats of shellac (break the shine, wipe with alcohol and coat with shellac when dry).

    · PAINTS: One tube each watercolor paint- Permanent Rose, Cobalt Blue, Sap Green and Lemon or Aureolin Yellow. Cotman at AC Moore or Michaels to begin with.
    · BRUSHES: one 1” or 1-1/2 inch good wash brush and one #10 or 12 round brush. A rigger brush can be purchased now or later.
    · PAPER: Arches 9 x 12 watercolor block – 140 lb.Cold Press (expensive so use your coupons) or you can purchase a full sheet or two of good paper from me at $1.00 each and it can be cut to the sizes we will work with for the whole workshop.
    · PALETTE: Craft stores have inexpensive plastic palettes. Get one at least dinner plate size with divided sections. Even three section Styrofoam plates from the Dollar Tree work well to start.
    · WATER CONTAINER: Plastic tubs from margarine or large yogurts will do or Dollar Tree/3 section divided plastic for leftovers is terrific.
    · MISC. Standard Kitchen sponge (no rough side), paper towels or tissues, masking tape 1” size (try Dollar Stores for inexpensive roll).
